CFA Society Italy Launches 7th Edition of CFASI Fund Management Challenge

12 February 2018 - Milan - CFA Society Italy has launched the seventh edition of the Fund Management Challenge: an equity fund management competition involving student teams from 14 Italian universities, sponsored by FactSet, UBS ETF, Deloitte, CFA Institute, Hammer Partners and with the support of Borsa Italiana (the Italian Stock Exchange).
During the Fund Management Challenge, university students compete in a realistic institutional investment scenario, enabling participants to develop both the individual and group skills necessary to achieve high investment returns. Under the supervision of a university professor, students attempt to maximise the returns of a portfolio whose contents may be modified each week, so long as five long-term and five short-term investments are maintained.
The teams, which can avail themselves of the support of a group of finance professionals who act as mentors, must explain the reasons for their investment choices and abide by Code of Ethics promoted by CFA Institute, which issues the highest professional certification in the international financial arena.
A committee of professionals and a specially constructed quality index are used to assess the students' work on a weekly basis, encouraging them to learn and improve throughout the competition. At the end of the competition, prizes are awarded to the three portfolios with the best returns.
"Promoting the principles of integrity and professional excellence among future finance professionals is the goal set by CFA Society Italy, in creating the Fund Management Challenge. These principles distinguish us as a non-profit association, and we are proud to offer young university students an opportunity to get closer to the world of institutional investment with the support of such high-profile players.” says Giancarlo Sandrin, CFA, CFASI President.
For UBS ETF "it is very important to continue our collaboration with CFA Society Italy and for the fifth consecutive year we are supporting the FMC. The high ethical and quality standards that students have to apply, the support of CFA-certified finance professionals and the teaching materials used are key elements for UBS ETF. ", declared Francesco Branda, Head UBS ETF Italy of UBS Asset Management.
"Since the beginning of the competition seven years ago, FactSet has supported students with a focus on the educational element of the competition. This year we will increase the training sessions and through the @Learning portal students will be able to learn financial concepts directly on the platform and match them with their economic studies. In this way, they will be able to connect the theoretical and practical aspects by immersing themselves in analysis at company and sector level, using tools for macroeconomic analysis, charting, stock screening and StreetAccount intelligent news flow monitoring. We thank CFA Society Italy for this opportunity and the universities for their continued support for the FMC. ", underlined Dorin Agache, Senior Consultant, Southern Europe IM Consulting FactSet.
The end of the competition is scheduled for 25 May and will be followed by an awards ceremony for the best teams, led by CFA Society Italy and by the sponsors and partners who supported their training throughout the competition.
